Eprints is an electronic archive into which any ANU staff member can place a text that is then freely and easily accessible online. Conference papers, book chapters, works in progress, journal articles: they can all go into Eprints. To use the service for the first time go to http://eprints.anu.edu.au and click on registration. Keep in mind that Eprints is primarily for essay-length texts. If you wish to publish a full-length monograph, then think about E Press. The ANU E Press publishes books by scholars associated with the ANU. An electronic version of each book is freely available online (and can be downloaded for free) or a hard copy can be purchased on request. The process for submitting an e-book proposal to the E Press is clearly spelled out on the E Press website (http://epress.anu.edu.au), and if accepted for consideration each manuscript undergoes a traditional scholarly monograph review process. All PhD theses that have successfully completed the examination process can be placed online through the Australian Digital Theses Program (ADT). They are then available worldwide, and can help to establish the academic profile of new PhDs. Importantly, having a thesis online does not negate the possibility of publishing, at a later date, a revised version of that thesis. It does make the research immediately accessible to scholars who would otherwise never know of its existence. As with Eprints, easy to follow, step by step instructions detailing how to submit a thesis are provided on the ADT website (http://thesis.anu.edu.au). |
